Tour Overview

Overview

Nicknamed the “Whiskey” route, Machame is known for being more challenging and expensive than the Marangu route. Among the routes to scale Kilimanjaro, this is considered one of the best in terms of acclimatization and cost. The Machame route is better suited for adventurous trekkers or those with some hiking or backpacking experience, as it is considered more difficult.

The Machame route offers a scenic and varied trek. However, due to its popularity, the number of trekkers has increased, slightly diminishing its appeal. The route approaches the summit from the southwest and descends via the Mweka route. Along the way, climbers are rewarded with stunning views of the expansive Shira Plateau, the option to scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco Wall, and a traverse beneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field.

Certain sections of this route are steeper than both the Marangu and Rongai routes, making it more physically demanding. However, it offers excellent acclimatization opportunities with plenty of “walk high, sleep low” scenarios. This challenging trek takes hikers through five diverse climatic zones, offering breathtaking scenery throughout. The pre-summit day can also be split, allowing climbers to rest before the final ascent. It’s a very popular trail.
