Nicknamed the “Whiskey” route, the Machame Route is known for being somewhat difficult and more expensive than the Marangu Route. However, when comparing routes to scale Kilimanjaro, it is one of the best options in terms of acclimatization and overall experience. The Machame Route is considered challenging and is better suited for adventurous trekkers with some hiking or backpacking experience.
The Machame Route offers breathtaking and varied scenery. However, due to its popularity, the increased number of trekkers can detract from its natural beauty. The route approaches the summit from the southwest and descends via the Mweka Route, rewarding climbers with views of the expansive Shira Plateau, an optional scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco Wall, and a traverse beneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice field.
In certain sections, this route is steeper than the Marangu and Rongai routes, making it physically more demanding. However, it offers excellent acclimatization opportunities with numerous “walk high, sleep low” options. This challenging trek takes you through five diverse climatic zones, providing stunning scenery and a great opportunity to split the pre-summit climb to ensure climbers are well-rested before the summit attempt. The Machame Route is a very popular trail among trekkers.
