The Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route is a short yet challenging path known for its steepness, making it one of the most difficult routes to climb. Arguably the least frequented route on Kilimanjaro, it passes through tropical rainforest and runs alongside the Machame Route. Traffic on this route is minimal unless an extra day is added to the climb. While the route can be completed in a minimum of five days, it is advisable to take six or seven days for better acclimatization and a more enjoyable experience. This route also merges with the Machame, Lemosho, and Shira routes.
The Umbwe Route requires some scrambling (climbing on hands and feet) at certain points. Although the path is beautiful, it presents challenges due to rocky formations and steep slopes. The Western Breach gained popularity among climbers using the Umbwe, Lemosho, Shira, and Machame routes until a rockfall claimed the lives of three climbers in January 2006. In response, Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA) closed the Western Breach Route, which was reopened in 2007 under the condition that all clients and their support members who wish to use this option must sign a waiver at the entrance gate, acknowledging that they proceed at their own risk.
However, currently, the Western Breach Route is closed again due to increased safety concerns related to rockfalls, making it more dangerous for climbers. It is expected to reopen in the future with additional restrictions and regulations from the government.
