Health & Safety on Kilimanjaro

Mt. Kilimanjaro Health and Safety

Vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to prevent diseases while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Vaccines help the body’s immune system recognize and fight pathogens like viruses and bacteria, keeping us safe from the diseases they cause. Vaccines protect against over 25 debilitating or life-threatening diseases, including measles, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, and typhoid. The recommended vaccinations for Kilimanjaro include Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A & B, measles, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, and typhoid. Ensuring you are up to date on these vaccines is crucial.

While most children receive their vaccinations on time, nearly 20 million worldwide still miss out, putting them at risk of serious diseases, disability, and death. Therefore, it is highly advisable to receive the recommended vaccinations before traveling to Kilimanjaro.

The list of recommended vaccinations for East African travel is regularly updated by the World Health Organization (WHO). You can consult your local healthcare provider for the most up-to-date information on health and vaccinations for Kilimanjaro.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is the most commonly encountered issue for climbers on Mount Kilimanjaro. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) occurs when you reach high altitudes, such as Gilman’s Point, Stella Point, or the Summit of Kilimanjaro. However, it can usually be managed by quickly descending to a lower altitude. To prevent altitude sickness, it is advisable to start your trek at a moderate pace, add an extra day for acclimatization, and drink 3-4 liters of water daily. Altitude sickness medication is also available.

Hypothermia

Hypothermia occurs when the body’s temperature drops significantly, but it can be prevented with proper care. Wearing the right clothing and equipment is essential. Make sure to keep your clothes dry, whether from sweat or rain. Layering clothing is also recommended. Treating hypothermia involves moving the affected person to a warm, sheltered area as soon as possible. Wet clothes should be removed, and the person should be placed inside three sleeping bags for warmth, ideally with another person to raise their body temperature.

Sunburn

While climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, you are exposed to direct UV radiation, which can cause severe sunburn. It is recommended to use sunscreen with at least 30 SPF. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat to cover your face and UV-protective sunglasses with side panels is also advisable.

Foot Problems

Ill-fitting or new boots that haven’t been broken in can cause foot pain and irritation. It’s essential to wear comfortable, well-fitting footwear. Toenails should be kept short to prevent rubbing or catching on socks. If a blister develops, remove the boot immediately and treat it with zinc oxide tape or a sterile plaster.
